What to Expect in Mr. Houdieshell's Room
This year, the math period each day will last roughly 90 minutes. A longer math period results in having the benefit of time for additional practice on math facts and skills that are being covered. A rough outline of each day would look like this:
Minutes 1-5: Completion of entrance slip (formative assessment of student progress from previous lesson)
Minutes 6-15: Math facts practice/review
Minutes 16-30: Review of previous night's homework, entrance slip, and questions
Minutes 31-60: Daily instruction (vocabulary acquisition, discovery of concepts, discussion of covered topics)
Minutes 61-80: Skill practice and RtI (Response to Intervention)
Minutes 81-85: Assign homework, add assignments in agenda and folders.
Minutes 86-90: Exit slip (formative assessment of day's lesson)
A rough timeline of the concepts covered during this school year is as follows:
Unit 1: Place Value and Decimal Fractions
Unit 2: Multi-Digit Whole Number and Decimal Fraction Operations
Unit 3: Addition and Subtraction of Fractions
Unit 4: Multiplication and Division of Fractions and Decimal Fractions
Unit 5: Addition and Multiplication with Volume and Area
Unit 6: Problem Solving with the Coordinate Plane
Summary of Year
Fifth grade mathematics is about:
(1) developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing understanding of the multiplication of fractions and of division of fractions in limited cases (unit fractions divided by whole numbers and whole numbers divided by unit fractions)
(2) extending division to two-digit divisors, integrating decimal fractions into the place value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, and developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations
(3) developing understanding of volume.
Students should expect to have homework (textbook pages, worksheets, Study Island assignments) each night from Monday to Thursday. I do may best to not assign homework on Fridays, as I know weekends can be busy for many families and I want students to enjoy their time away from school free from homework over the weekend. This is subject to change with variations in the schedule, such as snow days, shortened weeks, activities that take away from instruction, etc.
Also, students will have a review worksheet every week starting Aug. 17th. This worksheet will be assigned and passed out on Monday and will be due on Friday. Students are welcome to turn in this worksheet at any point during the week once it is completed.
While in my classroom, I have only a few expectations that I will ask of each of my students:
1.) I expect students will come to class daily prepared for class. In order to do this, you will need the following items each day:
- MyMath textbook
- Math folder
- Math notebook
- Math vocab book (composition notebook)
- Pencil and grading utensil
2.) I expect students will come to class each day ready to learn and ready to participate in class.
3.) I expect students will be mindful that other students are learning and will not disrupt their learning process.
4.) I expect students will ask questions when they do not understand a question or concept and will seek to have their questions answered.
5.) I expect students will try their best at all times.
